An Austin political consultant long under investigation pleaded guilty Tuesday to siphoning nearly $1.8 million from the campaign accounts of Lt.
Gov. David Dewhurst.
In a brief court appearance before U.S. Magistrate Mark Lane, Kenneth “Buddy” Barfield waived his right to appeal and said he understood he could receive up to 28 years in prison as no deal had been reached with prosecutors on punishment.
No sentencing date has been set for Barfield, who now lives in Alabama and has been released under community supervision, with bail at an unsecured amount of $10,000.
He and his lawyer, Gerry Morris, declined comment Tuesday as they left the courtroom.
